Decorating Ideas With Daybeds

Add pillows or stuffed animals to a young girl's daybed.

Daybeds are versatile pieces of furniture that can provide seating during the day and a bed at night. The style of your daybed and the room you use it in will determine the best way to decorate around it. For example, the decor in a den that also serves as a guest room will be different from a young girl's bedroom or a studio apartment. Does this Spark an idea?

Girl's Bedroom

White, black or metal daybeds with flirty designs are common in a girl's bedroom. Dress it up with a canopy by hanging a mosquito net or round canopy from the ceiling above the bed. Weave silk ivy or long flowery greenery around the edges of the bed if it won't pose a safety concern. Some daybeds have decorative knobs with butterfly or floral designs that go on the top corners of the bed. Frilly bedding with a lacy bed skirt and floral comforter in soft colors, such as blue and pink or lavender and yellow, will help create a soft and feminine look. Add an abundance of flower-shaped pillows and change the knobs on the dresser to novelty flower knobs. Hang pictures of flowers above the bed, or frame pressed flowers.

Teen Bedroom

Your teen will likely spend a lot of time on her daybed when she's by herself and when she's entertaining friends, so keep the decorations simple and versatile. Wrap a string of miniature lights, such as heart or butterfly shapes, around the back of the bed or hang the string above the bed. If she likes a more grown-up look, consider hanging paper lanterns above the bed. Use bright bedding, such as orange and fuchsia or lime and turquoise. Add fuzzy pillows in the same colors and a shaggy rug in front of the bed. Add towers on both sides of the bed to hold pictures, trophies, baskets for storage and other mementos. Add some of the same bright colors as the bedding to tie the space together.

Main Living Area

A daybed in a main living area, such as a studio apartment, will have to be more diverse to function as a place to welcome guests and serve as your personal space. Use a solid-colored comforter and bed skirt, or a simple pattern with neutral colors that isn't too bold, such as a chocolate brown comforter with cream piping around the edges. Line the daybed with two or three rows of large pillows. Add a couple of smaller colorful pillows in front like you would on a traditional sofa. Keep a trunk, storage ottoman or under-the-bed bins nearby to hold the pillows when you use the daybed for sleeping. Hang a mirror or series of pictures behind the daybed, such as black-and-white photographs or artwork that complements your color scheme.

Den, Office or Play Room

Your den, office or play room daybed most likely serves as a place to sit while doubling as a guest bed. Keep the decor neutral in a room that serves adults, such as black, cream or beige covers and pillows in an office or den. Use embroidered or subdued patterns, such as a damask print or simple floral designs, if you prefer patterns over solids. The pattern or color should complement the other pieces in the room to make the space functional, such as black to match your black desk and frames in the office or navy and white to complement a nautical-themed den. Hang floating shelves above the daybed to display collectibles, pictures or other knickknacks.

Use bright and colorful bedding on the daybed if the room doubles as a play room. Pile comfortable pillows and stuffed animals on the bed for the children to play with and cuddle with during play time or while watching movies in the room. Hang the children's artwork on the wall above the daybed and place colorful shelves or stacking bins on either side of the bed.
