Wrought iron fences are good dividing pieces for gardens and lawns. If you have a section of fence you are looking for ideas for, there are a few things you can do to add some flair to the dull black finish. Trellis
A wrought iron fence makes a natural trellis for any climbing plants. Grapevines will fill in the areas between the iron bars to make an ideal privacy fence, and climbing roses will add color to the dull black finish. Wire the climbing plants to the wrought iron bars using black wire to minimize visibility, and weave the climbing plants between the bars in an alternating pattern to support its weight.
Planters
Wrought iron fences provide a good surface from which to hang window planters. A simple window planter can be fashioned out of a length of gutter, secured to the wrought iron fence and filled with soil with drainage holes in the bottom. Plant colorful mums, gardenias or marigolds to contrast against the black iron.
Rustic Appearance
You may enjoy the worn, rustic look of iron that has been allowed to gather some rust. This process can be hastened by using sandpaper to remove any paint or lacquer that has been applied to the fence in a few locations. Hang a few old farm tools from the fence to complete the look, and plant a raised bed along the perimeter of your rustic fence garden.
Restoration
When dealing with classic designs like wrought iron, restoring the fence to its original condition should always be considered. A blacksmith or iron worker can re-weld any broken posts, and the whole fence can be coated in a black lacquer to bring back its shine. Many homeowners spend large amounts of money to install a wrought iron fence, so don't take yours for granted.
