Stools are a versatile seating option for any area around your home both indoors and out. Cut a simple stool seat from a tree stump to create a stylish and natural do-it-yourself stool. Instructions
1. Bring the stump indoors for at least two weeks to allow it to dry out. If the wood is green you may want to leave it for up to a month.
2. Place the hardwood stump on a work surface so that it is resting flat on its side. Measure 8 inches in from on end of the stump. This should be the end desired for the stool seat. Mark the measurement with a lumber crayon.
3. Saw along the lumber crayon line you drew in Step 1 to cut an 8-inch thick slice off from the stump using a bow saw. You should have an 8-inch thick, 16-to-18-inch diameter stool seat cut from the log once the cut is complete.
4. Chisel off all of the bark on the stump using a 2-inch flat chisel and a mallet. Sand the entire seat with a rough-grit sanding block. Continue sanding with progression from medium to fine-grit sanding blocks until the surface of the entire stump is smooth. Always sand with the wood grain.
5. Brush two even coats of shellac onto the stool seat with a natural bristle paintbrush. Allow the shellac to dry for 24 hours between coats. Allow the final coat to dry for 48 hours.
6. Position the seat with the top side down on a work surface. Evenly distribute the three wrought iron stool legs around the edge of the bottom side of the stool seat. Drive the screws that were included with the stool legs through the mounting holes in the legs into the bottom of the stool seat with a screw gun. Stand the stool upright.
