Spend A Weekend In Kennebunkport Maine

If you're looking for a weekend getaway, think about heading to the southeastern tip of Maine and spending a few days in Kennebunkport. Once a shipbuilding and fishing village, Kennebunkport has developed in recent years into a popular oceanfront tourist destination. With a variety of ways to kick back and relax, Kennebunkport is becoming a favorite vacation destination for many families.

Instructions

1. Catch a glimpse of the Bush family compound, the summer home President George H. W. Bush. The estate is located on a strip of land called Walker's Point, which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. The entrance to this expansive house is gated and guarded by Secret Service officers; visitors, however, can see the circular driveway in front of the main house and the American flag that flies in the center of it.

2. Visit the Kennebunkport Maritime Museum and Gallery. The renovated boathouse of author Booth Tarkington (the American novelist best-known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novels "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Alice Adams") now holds a fine collection of maritime artifacts, as well as the remains of Tarkington's schooner boat "Regina."

3. Spend some time shopping in Dock's Square. You will find everything from handmade jewelery by local craftspeople to antique bookshops to primitive furniture and home decor including lamps, pottery and wrought iron figures. When you need to rest after all that shopping, visit one of the quaint cafés and restaurants throughout the square.

4. Kick off your shoes and relax on Goose Rocks Beach. Check out the Goose Rocks Beach Association website to see if there are any kind of events or races scheduled during the time you plan to visit.

5. Don't forget to stop by for a bite and a beer at Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brewpub. All the beers found are made at the Kennebunkport Brewing Co., the seven-barrel brewery that is located directly below the restaurant.
