Headboards That Attach To Bed Frames

Wood is among the materials to consider when buying a headboard.

Headboards that attach to bed frames provide a finished look to your bed and a focal point for your bedroom. Installing them is easy, just a matter of attaching some screws from the headboard to the bed frame. The look is easy to change as often as you like, provided you have the means to buy or make new headboards. Headboards fit into a few categories based on material. Does this Spark an idea?

Wooden Headboards

The classic look of wooden headboards has been in vogue for centuries. You'll find antique wooden headboards in consignment shops and antique stores. Brand new wooden headboards fill today's furniture showrooms, as well. You can find wooden headboards in Georgian, Colonial, Mission, French Country, and Contemporary styles, among others. You must decide if you want a modern headboard with clean and simple lines, or a traditional headboard with ornate carving and turned posts. Consider whether you want a dark, medium or light-colored wood, a solid wood or a veneer. You can't go wrong with a wooden headboard, which will last for decades.

Upholstered Headboards

Upholstered headboards are very popular, lending luxury and sophistication to the bedroom. Upholstered headboards come in many shapes, most notably camel-back, wing-back and a simple rectangle. However, furniture makers can create an upholstered headboard in any shape you desire, including your own design. Upholstered headboards are available in stores in hundreds of fabrics, and even leather. You can also buy upholstered headboards that take slipcovers, allowing you to change the slipcover for cleaning. Upholstered headboards can be smooth or tufted with buttons, and may be trimmed with piping or nail heads. The look is glamorous and the feel is pure comfort.

Woven Headboards and Metal Headboards

Woven headboards work well in a room that's nature-inspired, especially one with a beach theme. You'll find these headboards made from wicker, rattan, water hyacinth and other natural fibers. They may be painted or they may be in their natural state of earth tone colors. Woven headboards have an outdoorsy, down-to-earth feel that may calm and soothe you. Metal headboards come in traditional and modern styles. Traditional styles are often painted white for a Victorian look, but they may also be made of dark wrought iron. Modern styles usually have a silver finish. You can find metal headboards that have simple lines or ornate curly patterns for a touch of whimsy.

Considerations

Before buying a headboard for your bedroom, consider how you'll use it. If you plan to sit up in bed and lean against the headboard, you may decide an upholstered piece is the most comfortable. Harder surfaces like wood and metal mean you'll have to make sure you have extra pillows for lounging. Woven headboards have a great look, but they creak loudly. Metal headboards get cold in the winter. Wood headboards attract a lot of dust. The many considerations really boil down to one thing, which is how the headboard looks. Make sure you love it, since you spend a third of your life in bed.
