Ideas For Plants In The Front Garden

The front garden provides beauty not only to the homeowner but to all who pass by. Additionally, front gardens can raise the status of a home as well as indicate the homeowner's appreciation for the natural world. Because the front garden is presented to the public, some plants may not be suitable. Still, many plants and flowers can be combined to create a long-lasting and elegant addition to the front landscape. Does this Spark an idea?

Container Garden Plants

Of course, one of the easiest ways to create a front yard garden is to use planters and pots. Containers are available in a number of configurations and sizes, and can stand alone as a centerpiece, or inconspicuously with a number of other planters. Container gardens are an easy way to work on multiple levels or to plant flowers that do not necessarily grow in the same types of soil. Varieties of plants suitable for a container garden include boxwood, zinnia, petunias and coleus.

Shrub Gardens

Growing plants in the front yard often means exposing them to more dangers from vandals, dogs and other animals than in your backyard. Shrubs are tough, woody plants, and some also produce beautiful flowers. Shrubs grow well near the home but can also be used to line a walkway and even provide a natural fence to separate the lawn from the rest of the landscape. Shrubs such as rosebushes are often the main attraction in a front yard garden while smaller shrubs such as the Siberian cypress are used as an evergreen ground cover.

Topiary

Large front lawns may benefit from topiary gardens. Topiaries are made from the training, clipping and pruning of shrubs to create a certain shape. These shapes range from cones and spirals to animal shapes and even the shapes of cars or people. The types of plants used for topiary include boxwood, yew trees and holly. Although topiary gardens are eye-catching, they require constant pruning to keep them in the proper shape as well as great deal of water and fertilizer.

Flower Bed

One of the easiest gardens to plant in the front yard is a traditional flower bed. Flower beds can be created from a lawn area and separated by edging. Flowers can be grown from seed or transplanted from a pot. Flowers for a flower bed include zinnias, cosmos and petunias.
