Ideas For An Upper Valance In A Bathroom

A valance is a simple but attractive way to dress a window.

Window treatments can add style to any room in your home, including the bathroom. Valances, window toppers that are generally 10 to 18 inches long, give your windows a finished look. They can be paired with curtains or blinds or, if privacy is not an issue, be the only window treatment you need. Valances come in a variety of colors, patterns, and materials, making it easy to find the perfect match for your bathroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Country

If your bathroom d cor is country inspired, choose a valance that is in keeping with the theme. Dress the window in a valance made from material in a traditional country print like calico or gingham. Mini floral prints also evoke a country feel. A plain muslin valance in white or natural stenciled with a country design like hearts, stars or pineapples add an artistic touch to a country bathroom. For a more feminine country feel, choose a ruffled valance or go with a tailored one for a more formal look. Dotted Swiss or lace adds a romantic touch.

Primitive

Primitive d cor is a little rough around the edges. Reflect that with a valance fashioned from a feed sack or burlap fabric. Or throw a length of muslin over a rod made from a wooden dowel. Tack a piece of twine or clothesline above the window and hang a plain cotton valance from it with clothes pins. Fashion a valance from a piece of a faded quilt. Make one from vintage handkerchiefs you have sewn together. For a rustic outdoor appearance, attach grapevines or branches to the window frame.

Contemporary

Modern window d cor is all about sleek lines. Choose a chic tailored valance in a fabric blend that looks like silk but is easy care and can stand up to the moisture in the bathroom. Coordinate the colors to match your towels. Opt for one in nubby linen and hang it from a wrought-iron pole threaded through grommets instead of the traditional rod pocket. Mount a piece of wood the width of the window and 4 to 6 inches high above the window to hide the rod and form a box-cut valance or cornice. Cover it with woven bamboo or canvas and couple it with a Roman shade in the same material.

Traditional

Traditional window treatments add a formal touch to a room, and the bathroom should be no exception. Choose a lined toile valance with a 3-inch rod pocket and cording on the bottom. Hang it on a flat rather than rounded rod that fills out the pocket.

Add classic style with a box pleated valance or opt for one with pinch pleats. Attach a cornice above the window and cover it with fabric that coordinates with the other colors in the bathroom.
