Bend Wrought Iron Railings

Wrought iron can be heated and bent into decorative shapes.

Wrought is and can be used in a number of different applications, from decorative yard items to being used in the manufacturing of tools or machinery. Shaping or bending wrought iron is typically done by a tradesman known as a "Blacksmith," however, you can also shape wrought iron for use as railing for inside or outside your home with some precautions. Blacksmiths use a "Forge" to heat the wrought iron. Shaping wrought iron at home will still require a significant amount of heat but from a different source.

Instructions

1. Use proper safety equipment including a leather welders or blacksmiths apron, eye and face protection and welding gloves.

2. Place the wrought iron in a sturdy vice. Measure and mark on the wrought iron where the bend will need to be made.

3. Heat the wrought iron using an oxyacetylene or propane torch. Heat the iron until it is glowing red.

4. Use heavy-duty metal forging tongs to bend the wrought iron into the shape you are trying to create.

5. Reposition the wrought iron if you still need to make other bends or adjustments to it. When done, remove the wrought iron from the vice using the tongs and place the wrought iron in a bucket of cold water. Once cooled, attach the section to the railing and move on to complete the next piece.
