Build A Rebar Trellis

Trellises can be simple or much more complex.

Trellises provide support for vines in the garden and add vertical interest to your garden display. You can use many shapes and materials to build a trellis including wood, branches, and wrought iron. Metal trellises are more durable than most other materials, but wrought iron is sometimes too expensive especially for large trellises or if your garden needs many trellises to fulfill your design. In these circumstances, you can make your own trellises from rebar. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure three long pieces of rebar 6 feet long or longer as desired for your garden. These pieces will be the vertical element of your trellis. Cut the rebar to the desired height by clamping the rebar and supporting the loose end on a cinder block. After cutting half way through, stop sawing, bend the rebar backwards and snap it into two pieces.

2. Lay out the three vertical pieces of rebar next to each other on the ground. Wrap wire around the bottom of the rebar 1 foot from the bottom. Continue wrapping the rebar for several inches to hold the rebar together tightly. Bend the exterior pieces of rebar out from the bound area in a fan formation.

3. Measure across the fanned rebar near the top and one-third of the way down. Add 3 inches to the measurement. Cut pieces of rebar to size.

4. Lay out the three vertical pieces of rebar in a fan formation. Measure across the fanned rebar near the top and one-third of the way down. Add 3 inches to the measurement. Cut pieces of rebar to size.

5. Lay the short pieces across the vertical pieces of rebar. Wrap the junctions of the crossbars and vertical uprights together with the binding wire in an X formation.
