Paint A Metal Bed Frame

A metal bed frame can add style and decor to your bedroom or guestroom, by painting it to match your overall color scheme. Metal bed frames can be found at a bargain price at many thrift stores and yard sales. These can be easily transformed to look new and stylish with just a little work and a few cans of spray paint. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take the bed completely apart, and remove the metal parts you want to paint to an area that is well ventilated. Check all of the nuts and bolts to insure they are in good shape. If they need replaced, put them in an envelope, or plastic bag and place them somewhere in sight. Take the bag of nuts and bolts with you when you go to the hardware store so you can match exact sizes.

2. Use a small wire brush and brush all of the surfaces of the metal bed frame to remove any loose paint, dirt or rust. A tiny wire brush about the size of a toothbrush gets into smaller places well. You can get a good assortment of wire brushes at the local hardware store. Make sure that you pay close attention to corners, weld spots or intricate designs on the bed frame.

3. Wipe the bed frame down, using a slightly damp cloth, to remove any loose dust, paint or rust that you have dislodged with the wire brush. Check to make sure all of the surfaces of the bed frame or smooth and dust free. Brush and wipe again if necessary. Let the frame dry before you begin to paint.

4. Prepare to paint. Either lay the bed frame down on newspapers, or lean it against saw horses covered by newspapers, or a drop cloth. Attach the spray handle to the can of paint and shake it up. The spray handle makes the paint can easier to hold onto, and helps to give a steadier flow of paint.

5. Make sure the area has proper ventilation, and that you have a face mask, especially, if you suffer from any breathing problems. Spray paint gives off quite a lot of fumes, and you do not want to breath them in. Run a fan if you need to, to blow the fumes away from you.

6. Spray the paint onto the surface of the bed frame in steady, sweeping motions, keeping the can about 6 inches or so away from the surface. Use long, slow strokes to avoid any runs. Walk around the bed frame and paint all of the surfaces that are visible.

7. Let the first coat dry for several hours, or overnight. Turn the bed frame pieces over and spray paint the portions you were not able to reach the first time. Allow it to dry again. Inspect the entire bed frame to make sure that it is covered to your satisfaction. If not, apply a second coat using the same technique. Reassemble the bed.
