Decorate Walls On Your Entry Staircase

Decorate an entry staircase for a welcoming atmosphere.

Your entry staircase is the first thing people see when they walk inside your home. Plain walls will create the staircase to look and feel unfinished, which isn't as welcoming as an entryway that's decorated. Art and accessories on the walls of the staircase provide a welcoming atmosphere and gives guests a glimpse of your family's personality and style. The colors and decor should complement the other areas that are visible from the entryway, such as your living room, and the upstairs landing and hall area. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Add a splash of color to your entryway by painting the staircase wall or putting up wallpaper. The color can be soft and neutral, such as tan, or warm, dark and inviting, such as chocolate brown. Alternatively, choose aqua for a beach-themed home or a buttery yellow if you prefer a softer, country vibe. Wallpaper can include elegant stripes, soft floral prints or any design you like. Peel-and-stick wall decals are another -- less permanent -- option and may be words, die-cut designs and even chalkboard, mirrored or cork shapes.

2. Hang a grouping of your family photos, pictures of flowers, city skylines or anything that you and your family enjoy. Alternatively, hang artwork, which can give the space a formal or playful feel, depending on the images you include. Use matching or similar frames to unite all the pieces.

3. Display mirrors, wall sconces or wall sculptures if you don't want to hang images on the staircase wall. Wrought-iron wall sculptures can add interest to the walls without taking away from the decor in surrounding rooms. Use matching wall sconces or mirrors on the staircase and in the living room to unite the space.

4. Install floating shelves or hooks if you want to decorate in a functional way. Hooks can hold umbrellas, jackets, backpacks or the items your family needs on the way out the door. Decorate shelves with boxes, baskets, candles, floral arrangements or pictures. Switch out your everyday decor for seasonal or holiday items throughout the year.
