Paint Deck Railing

Various types of deck railing systems have become popular for home and commercial use. One popular material for deck railings is wood. Wood deck railings are both safe and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and they are relatively inexpensive compared with other materials. One important thing to consider is that it is important to provide yearly upkeep, including painting the wood to guard against water damage.

Instructions

1. Buy an exterior latex paint of choice. Be certain to purchase enough paint for at least two applications to ensure that all surfaces of the wood are covered. Consider that some of the paint will be absorbed into the wood, resulting in additional applications.

2. Clean the deck surface, including the individual deck rails, with a water power washer if available. Otherwise, scrub the exposed surfaces of the deck railing with a scrub brush or other cloth to remove dirt and debris before painting. Allow the railing to dry completely.

3. Apply paint to the top railing first. Work from the top surface of the railing to the sides and then finally the underside. Be certain to cover all exposed areas, especially where the top horizontal rail meets with the individual vertical posts. Use either a paintbrush or a paint roller.

4. Apply paint to the individual railing posts, beginning in one corner and working around the railing system. Work from the top of the posts down to the bottom. Be certain to cover all areas of the wood, including where the wood railings have been attached to other pieces of wood, such as on the floor or on other additional horizontal railings at the bottom of the posts.

5. Apply an additional coat of paint in the same manner to the entire deck railing system once the first application has dried completely. This will ensure that the entire wood surface area has been covered and will be protected from water damage.
