1. Measure the area in which you want to place the wrought iron handrail. Determine the height of the handrail.


2. Draw or locate the handrail design you want. Look through history of design and d cor books to find different wrought iron designs. Pay attention to the size of the railing, as the size of a post or a rail can affect the whole appearance of the house.


3. Draw your designs and measurements clearly. Clip pictures similar to the designs you like. Determine the colors that will work best with your home. Black works best with a white, old-world style home, while painted railings may look best with brick.


4. Locate a local an artisan in your area and ask for a catalog or work samples. Supply the the artisan with your measurements, drawings and clippings.


5. Ask for the artisan or sales representative to visit your home and give you an estimate. Compare the different artisans' work and prices. Ask for a time of delivery, and find out if installation is included. Get references of an artisan's work, and check with your local Better Business Bureau to make sure no complaints have been filed against the company.


6. Expect to pay a certain percentage down before the handrail is made.


7. Inspect the finished handrail. Look for imperfections, scratches or any other problem than needs to be addressed before installation.


8. If installing yourself, ask for correct installation procedures and the correct bolt sizes. Use the appropriate installation hardware of the right support strength. Select treated hardware and use proper masonry tools for installation.
