Estimate A Wood Fence

Wood fences are common to many yards.

A wood fence is an addition to a yard that can make the yard beautiful and classic. Not only is it beautiful, but it can serve a practical purpose of keeping unwanted creatures out of the yard and pets in the yard. Wood fences can be built by the owner or by a contractor, but estimating the cost should always come before starting the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the yard for the fence. For a rectangular yard, measure one side in feet and then measure the length across the back of the yard. Add these two figures together and multiply by two to get the total lineal feet of fence needed. For odd-shaped properites, take measures along the lines where the fence is going to be placed.

2. Choose a type of wood. Though cedar is the most common wood for fences, there are a few wood choices and a fence built by hand can use any wood available at the local stores.

3. Pick a fence style. Wooden fences have several styles available, from the classic picket fence to privacy fences. The type of fence will alter the price, especially for privacy fences.

4. Determine an ideal height for the fence. A three-foot tall wood fence will be less expensive than a five-foot tall fence. The height will make a difference in the cost.

5. Pick the ideal gates. Gate types and the number of gates will change the price of the wooden fence. The more gates there are, the higher the cost of the fence.

6. Contact a contractor. There are many contractors that will put in a wooden fence. They can give an estimate cost over the phone based on the information about the type of wood, style of the fence, height of the fence and the measurements of the yard. These estimates will include all materials and labor costs for the wood fence.

7. Multiply the number of feet of fencing needed by the approximate cost per foot. The cost per foot can be estimated by the amount of lumber required, which will vary depending on the type of fence. Add the estimated cost of any gates. This will give you a rough idea of the cost of materials.
