AC A coil on Downflow Install - HELP!
My Trane air handler is vertical but upside down cause my system requires a downflow air supply (all ducts below in crawlspace). BUT - the AC A coil is installed right side up (top of A on top). Sooooo, my question is wouldn't there be a problem with condensate flowing into the blower/electric panel below? Seems to me on a normal upflow system the condensate gets blown up from the coil and then drips into a collector. But in a downflow system how is the condensate removed ?? Thanks Gene It runs to drain pan just like in up flow. The drain pan only runs under the perimeter of the coil - the entire middle of the coil is open for air flow. So I guess you are saying that the condensate clings to the metal coils and fins as it runs down into the pan? I would think the sheer velocity of the blower air speed would blow the condensate straight up (or down in a downflow system) onto the surrounding duct work. It will if coil gets dirty. But 99% of the time it will run down the channel to the pan. You dont say just what unit you have there. On a Trane2TEH air handler . For a downflow the A coil is on top of the blower. blowing down. Is this on a manufactured home if the electric heat kit and blower are below the coil there is a history of problems with water getting into the electrical system that is why the manufacturers exclude water damage from the warranty which I think is quite ridiculous because the design is a bad idea (water over electricity, duh) there is a way to combat this you need to keep the unit very coil, drain line and filter and I mean clean if anything is on that coil that will cause the water to drop off before it reaches the bottom of the coil it will drop right on the blower, also there is a device called a wet switch we use in computer rooms that will shut off the system at the slightest accumulation of water. I got hold of the Trane install doc and seems everything is per the guidelines. I did note that condensate gets blown all over everything below cause I can see traces of mold and also white residue from minerals in the water. I suppose the unit is engineered for this condition as its been in service 5 years with no problems.
