Alternatives to a drop ceiling in a basement

Alternatives to a drop ceiling in a basement

Does anyone know of any products out there that would be an alternative to a drop-ceiling? I am finishing my basement and the only thing left to do is the ceiling. I have never installed a drop-ceiling before and I don't have that much room. I'm going to have to make the ceiling different heights in different places due to pipes, joists, etc. I was hoping someone had some alternatives to drop ceilings. I have used an accustical tile ceiling in the basement. It allowed me to control the height and corners and was not hard to put up. Just the tiles, ferring strips, and a staple gun. Ask at your local home improvement store about these options. Have you ruled out building soffits around the obstructions and simply drywalling the ceiling? Seems like the simplest answer. Thanks for the advice. I don't think I want to drywall it because the rest of the basement is finished and I don't want to deal with all the dust from sanding. I guess I could just drywall it and then put up accoustical tile. That might be an option. I am also in the process of finishing my basement and was concerned with saving as much ceiling height as possible. plus I want to be able to get t o my pipes if need be. I think I am going to go with the drop type ceiling which attaches directly to the floor joists and saves headspace. They have these available a home depot. Just something to consider. You could also do a tray ceiling. You box out the obstructions with wallboard then install the drop ceiling. Check out this ceiling system. I plan to use it in my basement since it requires very little clearance. Looks easy to install, and they have it at my Home Depot. My brother used it in his house and it went up pretty easily--he and my husband did the whole thing in a day. My husband and I are also using planning to use it in his mother's basement (we're building a guest room). It's really ideal for a basement with a low clearance because you don't lose any height and it's easier than a regular drop ceiling to install because the plastic framing channels attach directly to the joists. The only complication you'll run into is pipes, ducts, etc that hang down. But that's something you'd have to address no mater what celing you chose. If you have like a 1 clearance above any pipes or ductwork, you can actually just install the ceiling above those obnstructions (the ceiling only requires about an inch). Then again, if you're trying to attain a truly finished look in your basement, you might want to box in those things and then just butt the celiing tiles to them.
