If an individual cares for your child, she may use her Social Security number as her taxpayer ID number.
Every business that files taxes and has employees is required to have a Taxpayer Identification Number or TIN. This number is issued by the Internal Revenue Service. Licensed daycare centers that have employees will have a TIN. However, if an individual cares for your child, she may not have a TIN and may instead use her Social Security number for tax filing purposes. If you wish to claim a tax credit for the money you paid for daycare during the previous tax year, you must enter the provider's contact information and TIN on IRS Form 2441.
Instructions
Daycare Provider
1. Ask the daycare provider for her TIN. Under most circumstances, she will be happy to give you the information.
2. Print a copy of IRS Form W-10, Dependent Care Provider's Identification and Certification (see Resources).
3. Fill out Part II of the W-10 form with your own contact information if you plan to have the form mailed back to you by the daycare provider.
4. Give the W-10 to your daycare provider and request that she fill out Part I, which includes the TIN, and return the form to you. She is legally required to provide this information to you.
State Licensing Board
5. Go to the Child Care Aware website (see Resources) and select your state from the drop-down menu.
6. Click Go and you'll be directed to a page with the name and contact information of the daycare licensing organization in your state.
7. Contact the daycare licensing organization for your state and request the TIN of your daycare facility.
Tips Warnings
You may be able to locate the TIN on a receipt from your child's daycare provider.
Check the daycare provider's website to see if the TIN is listed there.
If your daycare provider is a national chain, call the corporate office to obtain the TIN for your local facility.
Some databases charge a fee to locate a company's TIN, but there are no-cost ways to get this information.
