Coleman generator problem

Coleman Generator problem

Hi, newbie here. I just purchased a generator from someone off of craigslist here in Houston (16 days without power and counting). Well, I guess I got ripped off. The guy said that the generator was hard to start, but put out the correct voltage when it was running. The generator is a Coleman Vertex 7500. It is electric start with no pull start backup, and had a dead battery, so I was unable to test it. The guy seemed honest enough and I was desperate, so I bought it. Got it home and it was hard to start, like the starter couldn't overcome the compression on the compression stroke. It is a Briggs 14.5 horse vertical engine BTW. Anyway, I adjusted the valves to .004 and it starts up fine now. Only problem is that is only puts out about 65-70 volts. I have changed the brushes. Checked both diodes and the capacitor and they all read fine. But still only 70 or so volts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance, Chris you should be able to adjust the engine speed to correct the voltage out put. you will have to look for a throttle adjustment screw, it may be under a sheet metal cover if this engine has the auto idle up/down feature. life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies Thank you for the quick reply Speedwrench. With my luck, the power will be back on by the time I can get this thing to run correctly The engine seems to be running at correct speed, but I'm just going by my ear and I realize it's probably a useless assumption. I'll try to up the rpm's. Can even a couple of hundred rpm's make a difference? Also, this muffler has broken off right at the end of the exhaust pipe, so it is LOUD, making it harder to get a feel for the rpms. It actually does have the idle control switch, I have that switched off. Does that have an impact on the reading I'm getting at the outlet, or should it read 120 regardless of the position of that switch? Also, in the endbell, there is a small potentiometer that I think is used to regulate the voltage, it is set in the middle of it's range. I just found that (it is small) and haven't tried to adjust it yet. Thanks again, this thing has been giving me fits for over ten days now. Using a small Coleman 1850 to power this laptop at the moment, but firing up a window unit and fridge would be nice Something to look out for. I live here in Houston, and I have found that the Coleman generators are not doing what they say they will do. So for they have burned up 3 pumps with low voltage. I like Coleman, but they seem to be having problems with there generators. All of them have been in the 5500 to 7500 watt range. That size should be large enough to run a 8 to 12 amp pump with no problem, but there not doing it. I am just passing on observations I have made. Travis it should read 120 with it off, usually will not with it on. i have not seen the potentionmeter so not sure about that. most of the time low voltage is low rpm, even 100 rpm will drop the voltage to low sometimes. use a volt meter and try to raise the rpm to adjust the volts. murphy was a optimist Thanks again Speedwrench and Travis. Travis, I hadn't heard that about the Coleman's but it wouldn't surprise me. I never put a load on this on other than a droplight, which barely seemed to have the filament lit up, which led to me checking the volts with a meter. I'm just don't know how people can take advantage of other folks in times of disaster. Anyway, lesson learned I guess. My grandpa would spin in his grave if I cheated someone the way this guy did me. I asked him 3 separate times if it was putting out correct voltage--oh yeah, lit up the everything in the house, etc. Well, sorry for complaining. It's just been so frustrating, I'm tired of looking at this thing. Trying to be patient with the lack of electricity but it's getting old. It's 11:30pm here and I don't want to crank it off right now, but I'll try some idle adjustments tomorrow. Thanks for the tip on the switch to Speedwrench, I'm pretty sure I had it in the off position when I metered it, but I'll recheck everything tomorrow. Thanks again and any more input would be greatly appreciated. Someone told me that the winding or rotor could be shorting out, but I'm not that familiar with generators so I wasn't sure what he was referring to exactly. Anyway, thanks again guys. Chris
