Paint Wood Bar Stools

Wooden bar stools can be painted to match your home decor or personal style by using latex paint. These paints are the type most often used to paint interior walls and can be tinted to any shade you desire at paint or home improvement stores. Preparing the surface of the bar stools with a thorough cleaning and then sanding the surface is important to ensure that the paint properly adheres to the stools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sand the entire surface of the bar stool with 200 grit sandpaper. This will make the surface slightly rough and help the paint adhere to the stool.

2. Wipe the bar stool with a rag dampened in a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. The mixture will remove any dust from sanding as well as dirt or grease from the stool. Dry the bar stool with a clean rag.

3. Paint an alcohol based paint primer onto the stool with a paintbrush. Primers are available as alcohol based, oil based or water based, read the label to determine the base of the primer before you purchase it.

4. Sand the primer when it is completely dry with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet. Hold the sandpaper under running water and then rub the sandpaper on the stool to smooth out the surface of the primer. Wipe the stool dry with a rag when you are done.

5. Paint the bar stool with latex water based paint in the color of your choice. Allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat of paint to the stool.

6. Apply two to three coats of clear coat water based polyurethane to the bar stool when the paint has dried. Allow each coat of polyurethane to dry before you apply the next coat.

7. Sand the final coat of the polyurethane with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet until the surface appears smooth and glossy. Wipe away any excess water when you are done sanding.
