Build A Sturdy Awning

You can build your own awning out of wood that will be sturdy enough to handle most weather situations. An awning is basically an additional roof designed to provide protection from the elements. After you've constructed your awning, you can make it more aesthetically pleasing either by finishing it with roofing materials or by painting it. You can customize your awning to match the decor of your home or business. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the intended dimensions of the frame of your awning; take into consideration the desired length and slope of your awning.

2. Cut your lumber into five separate pieces: two beams for the upper support, two beams for the lower support, and one longer beam for the front.

3. Cut two 45-degree angles into two pieces of lumber with your miter saw. The miter saw has the ability to cut angles. The angles should both be on the same side of beam; these pieces will provide the slope of the awning.

4. Screw the ends of the long piece to the tops of the two side pieces with two long screws. Place the sloping beams on top of the short beams and screw them together with two screws. Screw metal brackets into both sides of the support beams.

5. Place the awning frame against a wall and screw the brackets into the wall.

6. Cut two triangular pieces of plywood for the ends of the awning frame; nail the pieces to the frame by placing nails along the perimeter approximately every 6 inches. Place appropriately sized plywood onto the front of the awning and nail them into place in a similar fashion.
