Clean A Rusted Cast Iron Grill

Save money and landfill space by cleaning your rusted cast iron grill rather than replacing it with one of the newer stainless-steel models. Removing the built-up grease, grime and rust will give you years of additional use from your grill. You'll find this admittedly dirty job well worth the time and effort. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the grill rack, bricks and heat element (if any) from your rusted cast iron grill.

2. Using a wire brush and paint scraper, knock off any loose dirt and grime that has built up on your grill.

3. Apply painter's tape to any surfaces on your grill, such as wooden and noncasted parts, that may sustain damage from exposure to a high-strength degreaser.

4. Spray foaming degreaser on the inside and outside of your grill. Allow the degreaser to work on the surfaces for at least fifteen minutes, then wipe it---and the grease---off.

5. Scrape off any exposed rust with the wire brush, then smooth the cast iron with the sandpaper.

6. Completely clean your grill with a degreasing detergent and water, then refinish the grill with rust-inhibitive, high-temperature-tolerant primer and paint.
