Decorate A Mexican Bedroom

A Mexican-themed room will use terra cotta, yellow, sand and blue colors.

Whether you live in a warm climate or not, a bedroom filled with earth tone colors and stylish patterns will make you feel like you are on a Mexican vacation every day. Once you apply traditional Mexican interior colors on the walls, the transformation will have begun and you'll be just hours away from relaxing in your theme room. Consider artwork and subtheme ideas before you begin, then build your collection of authentic Mexican accessories over time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Terra cotta paint will come in both lighter and darker shades of orange and brown.

Apply a desert color to the bedroom walls. Mexican home d cor begins with warm earth tones like rich oranges, deep reds and warm yellows. Choose a terra cotta color for your bedroom to make the space feel warm and cozy.

2. Mexican tiled floors will be colors of red or feature an intricate pattern in blues, reds and yellows.

Bring the eye down to the flooring in your Mexican bedroom with Mexican tiles or rustic and distressed pine floors.

3. A brightly colored rug or blanket can bring interest to your room.

Lay down a woven grass area rug to warm feet next to the bed or place a large Native American-motif area rug to add additional color and interest.

4. Distressed wood makes a bed frame and headboard feel warm and inviting.

Layer in bedroom furniture. Rustic pine furniture works well, as does heavy wrought iron or a faux rusted metal bed frame and headboard.

5. Natural fabrics and light colors dress a bed and break up the color in a theme room.

Soften the coloring in the room by dressing the bed in tones of sand and cream. Purchase solid colors to top off the bed so that the eye has a chance to rest in an otherwise stimulating room.

6. Black wrought iron is used in many table lamp styles.

Choose black wrought iron table lamps to top off bedside tables. Use a cream-colored shade to add some simplicity to the space.

7. Wood shutters can darken a room.

Cover windows with wood blinds, painted and distressed wood shutters or gauzy sheers to provide light and privacy.

8. Hang Mexican influenced artwork on the walls. Any print from artist Diego Rivera, such as the famous "Flower Seller" or "Flower Festival: Feast of Santa Anita," makes an ideal selection for a bedroom.

9. A pot of cactus will dress up a bureau or anchor a corner.

Fill a larger bedroom by adding a rustic wood chair and some colorful flowerpots filled with cactus or succulent plants.
