Repaint Woodard Iron Furniture

Woodard's iron furniture standard and premium finishes are applied by powder coating paint onto the wrought iron after it is forged. This is convenient because it reduces the incidence of rust and peeling, but it can chip, causing you to have to repair it. Maybe you want to repaint it to change it's impact on your outdoor decor. Repainting your Woodard iron furniture is an ideal alternative to purchasing new wrought iron furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Repaint Woodard Iron Furniture

1. Rinse your Woodard iron furniture. After removing any cushions, spray your wrought iron furniture with a hose. This will loosen any dried on dirt and make any chips in the original Woodard finish visible.

2. Locate and repair any surface issues that will affect your finish. Inspect your Woodard iron furniture for chips, scratches or erosion. Remove loose paint or rust with a wire brush. Smooth any surface scratches and uneven finish areas with aluminum-oxide sandpaper.

3. Wash your Woodard iron furniture with a mild detergent and water mixture. Completely wash the surfaces of your wrought iron furniture to remove any dust, dirt and oils from it. This allows your primer and paint to adhere better.

4. Locate a level area, lay out a tarp and place your Woodard iron furniture on the tarp with enough room between the pieces to allow you to walk between them. If your furniture legs or bases appear to sink into the tarp, place cardboard planks under the bottoms to avoid having to repaint the tips of your legs and bases.

5. Prime and paint your Woodard iron furniture. Because of the complex webs and curves on Woodard furniture, using a spray primer and paint is going to provide the smoothest finish. Two coats of latex rust-inhibitive metal primer and two coats of acrylic latex paint is recommended for repainting your Woodard wrought iron furniture, but with all the available paints with primer and rust inhibitors built in, choose one of them and complete the repainting in half the time. Either way, be sure to allow time between coats for the finish to dry completely. Follow the manufacturer's directions for spray painting.
