Hang Wall Planters

Wall planters add color and beauty to your window.

Add extra curb appeal to your home without spending a fortune. Hang wall planters under your window to add color and personality to your home. Flowers, herbs and even vegetables can be grown in a wall planter. Wall planters are not difficult to hang. You want to mount the wall planter securely so that the weight of the soil inside the planter does not pull the planter off of the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Examine the area where you will mount the wall planter. The surface you mount to will determine what type of mounting hardware is necessary. Mounting into brick will require lag shields to screw the mounting screws into. If mounting on block, place the mounting screws in the mortar because hollow block will crumble. Wood surfaces require wood lags.

2. Locate the studs under the window frame from inside the house with a stud finder. Mark the location of studs on the top of your windowsill so you can see the marks from the outside. You will typically find wall studs on each side of the window and near the center of the window.

3. Hold the wall planter under the windowsill at the height you desire. Keep in mind the mature heights of potential plants when deciding on the location of the wall planter. You want to be able to open the window even with a full-grown plant in the wall planter.

4. Mark the wall in the spots where you will drill holes. The holes should be in line with the marks you made on the sill to indicate where the wall studs are. Have a helper place a level on the top of the wall planter to check the levelness of the planter. Remember that if you are mounting into block, align your mounting holes with the mortar. Set the wall planter down after marking the mounting holes.

5. Drill pilot holes for the mounting lag screws with a drill. If mounting into block or brick, use a drill bit that is the same diameter as the lag shield. Tap the lag shields into the wall with a hammer.

6. Lift the wall planter up and line the mounting holes in the planter with the pre-drilled holes on the wall. Place a flat washer on each wood lag and mount the wood lag into the wall with a socket wrench.
