Decorate A Caribbean Living Room

Whether you prefer the elegant aesthetic of a luxury Caribbean beach resort or the more bright and casual look of Caribbean tropical decor, decorating your living room with a Caribbean theme transforms the room into a welcoming and relaxing place. The light and breezy feeling of Caribbean style provides an ideal backdrop for entertaining. You can add a few accents or paintings to give your living room Caribbean flavor, or invest more money and time with a full room makeover. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clear and clean your living room. The Caribbean look favors a more sparse and less ornamented approach, allowing natural light and breezes to enter and travel through the room. Make windows sparkle by cleaning the glass and surrounding woodwork. Move furniture with bulky shapes or high profiles away from the path of light.

2. Establish a Caribbean-inspired palette in your living room. To achieve the look of an upscale beach resort, go with white, cream and wood-stained warm, medium and dark colors. For a more tropical style, use bright mango orange, lime green, periwinkle, sunny yellow and pink in various combinations. You can also choose to go with deeper colors that evoke the sand and sea, such as cobalt blue, bottle green, earthy terra-cotta and gold.

3. Invest in some key furnishings that typify Caribbean living room decor. Solid wooden pieces may feature artisan details such as hand-painted trim, wood joinery, rustic finishes, wrought iron scrolls, glass insets or engraved panels. Natural materials and fibers such as bamboo, sisal, rattan, wicker, stone, clay, cotton, wood and glass should predominate. Keep pieces low and modular so that the sun and fresh breeze can easily travel throughout the living room.

4. Accessorize your living room with Caribbean flair. Leafy green plants and bright blossoms add tropical accents to your living room. Sheer panels or pale cotton curtains keep window treatments to a minimum so that the view can be a starring attraction. A ceiling fan evokes colonial plantation style. Paintings of Caribbean scenes, such as bright buildings, winding streets, nautical scenes, tropical fruits or festivities add an authentic Caribbean note to the living room.
