Make A Dressing Vanity

A vanity you create for yourself can be much better than anything you can find at the store.

You don't have to consult an interior decorator to design your own vanity or hire someone to build it for you. All you need is a little creativity and a free weekend. Before you know it, you can have a vanity where you can spend as much time as you want preparing for a day at work or a night on the town. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use ready-made items to create the base for your dressing vanity. Sofa tables, desks, bookshelves or open-end display cases can work wonderfully. A desk can be easily converted to a vanity by just adding a top. Using two bookshelves or end tables will take a bit more work. Measure the height of the bookshelves or end tables to make sure they will be tall enough to allow you to sit at the vanity. Also make sure they're sturdy enough to support a top.

2. Choose a countertop for the vanity. Use a piece of plywood or a ready-made laminated countertop. Again, make sure it's deep enough to allow you to sit at the vanity. In addition, make sure it's long enough. Other options include an old wooden door or a wrought-iron gate from a resale shop.

3. Paint the vanity top, front, back and sides in bright colors like pink or purple to give it a funky contemporary look. Or consider using squares of marble tile to give the top a sophisticated look.

4. Consider fabric as an alternative to paint. Use spray adhesive to glue fabric to the top.

5. Add baskets for storage. Store makeup, scarves, ties, belts, jewelry and other accessories in the baskets. Spray paint the baskets to complement the colors of the vanity, or leave them natural.

6. Conceal the storage bookshelves with a fabric skirt. Create no-sew panels, cut to accommodate the width of the shelves. Use fusible tape to make the hems. Use fabric glue to secure the panels to the sides and the top of the bookshelves.

7. Add a glass top, cut to size. The glass will allow you to use an uneven surface, such as the door or a wrought-iron gate as a vanity top, while making cleanup a snap.

8. Select a mirror to hang on the wall behind the vanity. Add lamps on both sides of the top for lighting. For added glamor, consider lamps with jewels. Also consider adding a lighted magnifying mirror.

9. Repurpose a dining room or office chair for the vanity. Alternatively, pick up a chair at a yard sale, and reupholster it in colors and patterns coordinating with the rest of your vanity. For a finishing touch, add a small pillow.
