Build A Sitting Room

Create a sitting room that reflects your style.

A sitting room is one of the communal spaces in your home; and as such, it should be a welcoming atmosphere that invites friends and family members to gather. While a sitting room is often a formal space, you can make it attractive without making it stuffy. Choose a style that reflects your personal taste to create a tasteful and warm tone that draws people in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a color scheme for the room. Opt for colors that coordinate with the style you are setting for the room. For example, for a contemporary design, consider a monochromatic color scheme, or for a rustic look, opt for muted earth tones. Incorporate these colors into the room through paint, furnishings, linens and decorative accents.

2. Choose furnishings for the space. As with the color scheme, pick items that coordinate with the design of the room. A velvet settee, wing back armchairs and a glass-topped coffee table are options to consider for a traditional design while a rattan or wicker couch and chairs with a whitewashed coffee table are well suited for a beach-inspired space.

3. Arrange the furniture into conversational grouping areas. Position the sofa and chairs so that they face one another and guests can converse with ease.

4. Define the seating area with an area rug. Laying an area rug underneath the couch and chairs adds warmth and color to the seating area while making it more appealing. Opt for a rug that works with the design of the room, such as one that features geometric prints in a modern space or a replica of a Persian design for a traditional look.

5. Incorporate accessories that showcase your personal interests and coordinate with the look of the room. Display photographs and paintings in wrought-iron frames for a natural look. Place candles in colors that tie into the color scheme on decorative trays and set them on the coffee table. Display collectible items on wall shelves or table tops. Arrange satin and silk throw pillows along the backs of the chairs and couches in a space with a regal design.
