Iron Fence Maintenance

Iron fences represent some of the most beautiful and ornate fences in the world. They come in a variety of colors and style, but they all have one thing in common, and that is their need for maintenance. Knowing maintain your iron fence can provide you with fencing that will last a lifetime. Does this Spark an idea?

Proper Installation

The first step to iron fence maintenance is proper installation. If you are doing the job yourself, you should take care to follow the instructions precisely. If you have the job done professionally, make sure that the contract has provisions for repair of any work that is not done to specification. Also check the warranty to see how long you are covered if anything goes wrong during the first year or so.

Component Repairs

Part of the routine maintenance is to inspect the components to ensure that there are no loose bolts, latches or other assemblies that may fall off or cause a segment or gate to fall. Iron fencing is typically very heavy, and a serious injury or damage to your property could result from faulty components.

Avoid Rust

Not many real iron fences exist today because it is far more costly to erect an iron fence than one that is made of galvanized steel. If you have the real thing, you know the worth of your fencing by virtue of the price you paid for it. This is all the more reason to invest the time and effort to ensure that you do regular maintenance.

One of the major culprits is rust. Any part of an iron fence that has not been properly coated with protection will rust. A brand new iron fence can show rust in two years or less, depending on the climate. Avoid rust by making sure your iron fence is properly maintained and protected. This means keeping your fence painted with weather-resistant paint. Check the fence annually for any areas that need to have the paint touched up. If a touchup is needed, sand the area down to bare metal to removal all rust before painting the area.
