Do A Resume For Dummies

Resume writing made simple


Resumes are extremely important because they are a company's first look at your qualifications and will determine if they choose to interview you or not. This is the first impression you make on them, so make sure it is perfect and conveys only pertinent information.


Instructions


1. Look at samples of other resumes. There is a generic format that most people can use but you need to research make a resume for your specific job. Standard samples will give you an idea of what your resume should look like.


2. Choose your layout. This is an easy decision after you have looked at samples. Decide things like what barriers, bullet points, and font you want to use.


3. Type contact information. This should be front and center at the top of the page. Your name is the biggest font on the page. Include your name, address, email address, phone number and website if applicable.


4. Type education information. Under your contact information include where you went to school and from where you graduated. Include your major and the city your school was in.


5. Type relevant work information. You may have held several jobs but some may not apply to the job you are trying to get. For example, if you are seeking a job as a secretary, your job as a mechanic is not applicable. If you have only worked one or two jobs include them all.


6. Type any relevant awards and volunteer work.Throughout your time at work and school you may have won awards or recognitions. These should show up on your resume because it shows you are a hard worker and an achiever.


7. Proofread your resume. Companies receive hundreds of resumes so any mistake will get yours thrown out. Have friends proofread it if you do not trust your proofreading skills.
