Adding Fabric To A Wrought Iron Mirror

Decorate an iron mirror with your child's favorite color.

Wrought iron is naturally bold and striking in its appearance. Decorating the outline of the mirror with fabric-based pillow piping adds a soft disparity to the iron and will help enhance the shape and features of the mirror. Select a fabric color that contrasts with the color of the mirror for maximum effectiveness; orange fabric against a blue mirror, for example.

Instructions

1. Determine the area of the mirror. Measure the length and width. Multiply the length and the width by two to equal the area. For example, if the length is 18 inches and the width is 12 inches, multiply 30 inches by two to equal a total area of 60 inches. Add 8 inches to the total area to account for the corners over which the fabric and cord must bend. Your total area, for the sake of example, is 68 inches.

2. Cut a strip of cotton or denim fabric to 1 1/2-by-68 inch with a pair of fabric scissors. Trim away excess free-hanging fibers with pinking shears.

3. Lay the fabric atop an ironing board. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Iron the fabric to permanently cease the fold.

4. Lay the fabric onto an open work surface. Center a 1/4-by-68 inch cotton welt cord onto the fabric. Re-fold the fabric over the cord. Pin the fabric over the cord using push pins.

5. Sew the fabric closed flush against the pipe employing a zipper or piping foot attachment on your sewing machine. Trim away excess seam allowance with fabric scissors.

6. Lay the mirror right side up onto a flat surface.

7. Bond the pillow piping around the outer edges of the mirror using permanent epoxy. Allow 30 minutes for the epoxy to fully dry.
