Repair Cast Iron With Rust

Cast iron is popular metal for many items. Cast iron cookware is preferred by many chefs. There are many wood-burning cast iron stoves that provide heat and also cooking features. Some lawn or patio furniture is also made of cast iron. But being made of iron means that any object made from it is more prone to rust. This reddish brown rust is very familiar to people. Although most, if not all, cast iron objects are manufactured with a rust-proof coating, this coating eventually wears off. In a short time there is rust on the cast iron. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


Cast Iron Cookware


1. Wash cast iron pots and pans. Use soapy water. Let the item dry.


2. Scrape off the rust. Use a wire brush to scrub off the rust. This method is good for removing the surface rust that forms on cast iron cookware.


3. Season the cast iron cookware. Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to all areas of the pots and pans.


4. Apply a sheet of aluminum foil to the rack in the oven. Turn on the oven to 375 degrees F. Place the pot or pan upside down on the rack. Leave it in the oven for 1 hour.


5. Turn off the oven. Let the pots and pans cool inside the oven. Remove and store them in a dry place.

6. Wash off the item. Use a garden hose to wash off cast iron outdoor furniture. Spray all areas of the furniture.


7. Scrape the rust off. Use a wire brush to scrape off the rust down to the bare metal.


8. Prime and repaint. Apply a primer and rust-resistant paint to repair the furniture.
